Everyone is finally back to school! Whew! I've had students since August 30th, but Frances didn't start until September 10th. She is now in the 4th grade (California history, and that darn missions project - what do you do with your model of a mission when it's all graded and finished? My friend Kathleen suggested that instead of a scale model of a California mission, students should be allowed to do a photo journal. I would love that, because it's not 3D!) at Maranatha Christian Academy, a.k.a. big Calvary. She was thrilled to go back to school, to see her friends. She does like school, but she won't admit it! Abigail started in a preschool class. She is a "typical peer" in the classroom next door to mine. Santa Ana Unified wants all of our special ed preschool classes to have typical peers in them, to satisfy some sort of requirement. It's probably the letter of the law, but not the spirit of the law. It would be nice to have special ed students in regular preschools, but that is not going to happen any time soon. So we bring in a typical kid or two, and say that we've met the requirements. Abigail couldn't be in my class, as we are not supposed to have our own children with us at work, for any reason. I am happy to have her next door, because although the program is for hearing-impaired children, it is an oral program. All of the children have some hearing loss, but they all speak. Basically, it is a general education preschool class. Abigail goes to school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 to noon. Our fabulous family of babysitters picks her up from school, and she spends the afternoon there until 2:30. Abby loves it! She is full of stories about her new friends, the things they do, art projects, etc. She has a ladybug backpack, and feels like a big girl.
Never mind that in the pictures, she looks almost the same size as Frances....
